Types of Headaches

There are over 150 different types of headaches so it can get confusing sometimes trying to figure it out. Below are descriptions of the most common headaches you may be suffering from.

Tension Type Headaches

Tension-type headache is the most common primary headache and typically presents as a tight band around your head.

Tension-type headaches present as a tight band around both sides of your head and are typically caused by overactive neck and shoulder muscles. High levels of stress and poor sleep can further exacerbate these headaches and increase the likeliness for them to become a chronic problem.

A common finding in many tension-type headache sufferers is the presence of myofascial trigger points. Trigger points are hypersensitive taut bands of muscle that follow a specific pattern of referred pain. The tight muscles found with tension-type headache are often associated with poor posture and prolonged sitting, and classically refer to the temple regions as well as around and behind the eye. These pain referral pains often accompany tension-type headaches.

Tension-type headaches are often confused with migraines as they can present with symptoms such as sensitivity to light and sound, as well as other visual disturbances. However, an important distinction of tension-type headaches is that they do not cause nausea or limit your day-to-day activities.

Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches present as a dull ache in the back of the head, where the skull and neck meet, but the pain can also refer to the forehead, the temples, and behind the eyes.

Cervicogenic headaches, by definition, are headaches caused by the neck and typically feel dull and aching. Some common neck issues that may cause a cervicogenic headache include joint or muscular dysfunction, inflammation of joints in the neck, poor posture, and even spinal degeneration.

Patients often find the neck muscles to be sore and any neck movement can aggravate the headache. This type of headache affects many office workers as staying in one position for prolonged periods can make these headaches worse.

Cluster Headache

Cluster headaches are defined by onset of several headaches through a relatively short period of time.

A defining characteristic of this headache is a headache every 24 hours for 6-12 weeks at a time. These headaches can be quite severe, lasting anywhere from minutes to hours, and usually affect the areas around your eye and the side of your head. Cluster headaches can also be accompanied with a runny nose, teary eyes, facial sweating, swelling in the eyelids, and even droopy eyelids.

Migraines

Migraines often present as a throbbing headache that can last hours to days and can be so severe that day-to-day activities become extremely difficult.

Migraines are one-sided throbbing headaches that can last anywhere from hours to days. It is often accompanied with nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound. However, migraines are complex and several types of migraines exist. Two of the most common types are migraines with aura, and migraines without aura.

An aura occurs right before the migraine attack. Approximately 20% of migraine sufferers will experience some sort of sensory disturbance, usually in the form of visual changes such as flashing lights or missing spots. Patients may also experience confusion, difficulty with speech, pins and needles, tingling, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg. This set of symptoms is called an aura.

Migraines typically begin in late childhood to adolescence. A defining feature of most migraines is trigger factors that elicit a migraine attack. These triggers may include stress, light, changes to sleep, diet, alcohol, or even hormones. Interestingly, hormonal migraines have also been linked to different phases of the menstrual cycle.
